My Robin Williams Moment

When I first heard the news that Robin Williams died it felt like a sucker punch to my gut.   Oh no!  Why?  How?  As the news of his death and the whys and hows began to flow out I continued to have this sadness and sense of loss.  This profound feeling of sadness for a man I had only met once.   I have never felt this way about a “celebrity”,  about someone who was not in my close circle of family and friends.  Ever.  And by the looks and accounts of people around the world - I am certainly not the only one.

I met Robin Williams in the summer of 1992 in the Mediterranean while I was crew on a yacht - another lifetime ago and only a moment in the timeline of my life.

2 weeks ago I took a long flight from the east coast to the west which gave me plenty of time to think…about a lot of stuff.    Here’s one little thought I had about water and the importance of getting enough.   Even though I’m a health coach, self proclaimed health nut and all this other healthy stuff (massage, yoga, blah, blah, blah) I STILL don’t always do the right thing.  News flash for you…..I’m not perfect!  Shocker , I know!

Huh?  A what?  Yes, Goji Berries.   Super food yumminess.   The Goji berry comes from the high plateaus of the Himalayan Mountains.  They have been used for over 5,000 years by traditional Chinese and Tibetan medicines because they are loaded with antioxidants and are valued for increasing longevity and strength building qualities.

 When I was going to nutrition school in NY my best buddy Laura Nicholson shared with me her favorite way to eat them.   And it is so easy.   Ready?

 

Green Smoothie in less than 2 Minutes!

I hear this all the time..."I just don't have time in the morning to make a smoothie".  It drives me crazy.   So I set out to prove that you can make a smoothie in no time at all.   It's much better than grabbing a bagel or a piece of toast - or worse - having no breakfast at all!  

Most people in the US are living on the SAD diet (standard American Diet) which consisits mostly of processed foods, sugars and fat.  Just by adding in greens (kale, spinach, collard greens for example) you are improving your diet instantly.  A green smoothie will fill you up and actually aid in weight loss.  Come on!  Give it a try.  It'll only take a couple of minutes!

Here's the recipe:

Coconut Water (about a cup or so)

Frozen mango chunks

1/2 frozen banana

Handful or more of kale

Blend and enjoy!!

Not going to Wash the Gray Outta my Hair!

Yes that's right.  I'm not coloring my hair anymore.  I'm done.  Aug 2010 was the last time I colored my hair -  much to the horror of some of my girlfriends and one hairdresser in particular.   I decided that I would succumb to nature and just let my hair be the color it's supposed to be.  Some suggested I cut it short so as not to endure the weird half and half look.  I did not cut it.  I've been wearing my locks long for years and I like it long.  I cut it short one time - super short.  So not me!!  So right now I'm in that half gray half blond stage and it's really not that bad.  Maybe being blond makes it a little easier.

This decision to go gray has been very freeing.  No more appointments every 6 weeks to put chemicals onto my head and hair.  I'm saving money!  That's always a good thing.  And I think my hair is a little thicker, shinier and happier!  How about that! 

It's funny how people react to the idea of going gray.  Some friends told me straight out that I would hate it and why waste my time?  I think it looks pretty cool actually.  Some friends told me I was going to look so much older.  Whatever!  I feel so incredibly good in my skin at this very moment.  I am healthier now than I have ever been.   And I think when you shine on the inside you glow on the outside.
